Over 7000 Nigerians Are Studying in U.S, Says Embassy

The U.S. Embassy says no fewer than 7,000 Nigerians are studying in the U.S. The Embassy made this known during tour of its Consular Section by media professionals in Abuja on Wednesday. The Consul General, Mr William Laidlaw, also 66 per cent of tourist visa applications were approved in 2014.Over 7000 Nigerians Are Studying in U.S, Says Embassy

Laidlaw said the U.S. visa application processes were simple and not as stringent as people thought. “Between 2009 and 2014, visa applications rose by 345 per cent in our missions based Abuja and Lagos.
So, Nigeria is an expanding economy, Nigeria is an expanding country. “Nigerian middle class is becoming more and more prominent and growing.

Nigerian businesses coincided with the economy are growing as well. “All those things we see reflected in the growth rate we see in visa applications”, he said. Laidlaw explained that the U.S. Mission was working to improve and trying to make its visa processes better for Nigerians by decentralising it. “To really qualify for a visit to the U.S., you have to show you have social and economic ties sufficient to meet the immigration terms we have in our laws.

“To have those social and economic ties, usually means somebody who has developed a career, developed a household and has done something to develop himself within Nigeria.” He explained that those who had social and economic ties usually had easier time and more chance to obtain U.S. visa than somebody who is just starting out.

He, however, said young business people or students who did not receive a visa should not be discouraged as they could be successful the next time they applied. Laidlaw said people who were refused visa could re-apply if they felt that the situations had changed, adding, statistics showed that many who re-applied were issued visas. “If you can establish your social and economic ties and we understand who you are in Nigerian context, that allows us to make an evaluation judgment. “It’s very hard for very young people, I’m sorry, but that’s the way the law is written”, he said.

The University of Nairobi, School of Journalism, and Strathmore Business School, both in Kenya; while in South Africa, the University of Rhodes School of Journalism, and Gordon Institute of Business Science, are the other four universities.

The BMIA will also focus on executive training programmes to enhance coverage of business and economic development in Africa.

In an email interview with our correspondent, the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahmon Bello, expressed his delight at the partnership.

He said, “For us at the UNILAG, we expect that we are going to benefit from this partnership. The curriculum developed will have an impact on our existing curriculum in order to enhance the quality of training we offer to our students. We will also take advantage through exposing our people – our members of staff and students – to the techniques to be used, and imbibe them. We may end up developing a specialisation in financial journalism if it becomes necessary.”

Bello added that Nigeria and Africa would encourage foreign investment into the continent, as well as infuse the best practices in business education and journalism.

He said, “The BMIA is expected to enhance financial journalism for adequate coverage of business and economic development in Africa. The baseline is the need to have accurate and analytical reporting of economic situations on the continent. As I mentioned during the launching of BMIA in Johannesburg, South Africa, last year, this is what will enable faster and accurate business decisions by would-be investors within and outside of the continent.

Why We Can’t Decide Fees To Private Universities - FG

Binutiri | 08:31 | Be the first to comment!
The Federal Government on Thursday asserted that it was not within its domain to dictate the amount of tuition fees to be charged by private universities in the country. Why We Can’t Decide Fees To Private Universities - FG

Government has also ruled out the possibility of funding private universities in Nigeria as being demanded by proprietors of some of the institutions.

Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, who made this know on Thursday, in Abuja, said the responsibility of the government was to ensure that tuition fees were not charged above the reach of Nigerians.

He said: “In Federal Government tertiary institutions and colleges, students don’t pay tuition fees. They are tuition-free but government cannot dictate to private universities the fees they charge. However, government is there to ensure that private universities don’t charge outrageous and indiscriminate tuition fees,” he said.

The minister also said that it would not be wise for the Federal Government to fund private universities through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), explaining that the fund generated by TETFund was a contribution from private sector to the government for intervention in its institutions.

He said the appeal of the government was for the private sector to continue to invest more in education in Nigeria as it is obtainable elsewhere around the world.
