The National Association of Ogun State
Students has given the state government a 14-day ultimatum to pay
bursary and scholarship to its members or risk a protest in the state.
The state government, the leadership of
the association said, owed its members grants for the 2012/2013 and
2013/2014 academic sessions.
The President of the association, Mr.
Balogun Abdulgaffar, stated this in Abeokuta, noting that Governor
Ibikunle Amosun-led administration had not kept to his promise of paying
the grant since August.
According to Abdulgaffar, members of the
association will embark on a peaceful protest, starting the action at
the Governor’s Office if the authorities fail to attend to them after 14
days.
He spoke to journalists in Abeokuta on Monday.
According to Abdulgaffar, the government
needs to be serious in supporting students as such allowance helps them
to augment what they have.
He said, “Our demands include an
immediate disbursement of bursary and scholarship awards to our members;
and the implementation of reduced tuition regime in the state-owned
tertiary institutions, among others.”
He also regretted that the authorities of
the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, had yet to implement the new
tuition as directed by the state government.
The state government had, in October, promised to commence the implementation of the new tuition from the new academic session.
